Note:
The applicant must have a M.Sc. degree in geology or another relevant degree. We are seeking a creative and innovative student with a strong background in geology and a dedicated interest in petrology, mineralogy, geochemistry and/or geochronology. The applicant should be familiar with the basic analytical techniques for chemical analysis of rocks and minerals. We expect that the candidate will publish in international peer?reviewed journals, write a PhD thesis within the project duration of three years and assist in teaching within the Department.
The aim of the position is to conduct detailed geochemical, isotopic, geochronological (Ar-Ar) and in situ zircon (Hf and O isotopes) studies of magmatic rocks generated during the late Cretaceous change from subduction-dominated processes through to continental break-up and the opening of the Tasman Sea in New Zealand. The objective is to constrain the timing of magmatic events and identify the sources involved during magmatism. Fieldwork in New Zealand is planned for early 2012.The successful PhD candidate will be offered a full-time Ph.D. position for a period of three years, contingent on a satisfactory performance, with the specific intent that it results in a Ph.D. degree and scientific publications.
